Background
Firstlight Outfitters makes four pieces of kit—a two-person tent, a down quilt, a pocket stove and a lantern—for hikers who set an alarm to watch the sky change.
Challenge
Outdoor sites tend to drown in specs and promotions. Firstlight wanted to sell a feeling without going vague: each piece still had to say what it’s for and what it weighs.
Our Role
- Brand Storytelling
- Web Design
- Frontend Development
Solution
We built the site like a photo book. Three full-bleed images are numbered as plates—ridge camp, the view from the tent door, the walk out—with only a short manifesto and a four-piece kit list between them, so a purchase takes very few words.
Photography as numbered plates
Each image carries a caption like “PLATE 01 — RIDGE CAMP, FIRST LIGHT” and a link to the gear in it, so the pictures double as navigation.
One list is the whole shop
Name, one-line purpose, price and an Add button for each item, plus a single button for the whole kit.
A restrained voice
“Light enough to carry up in the dark, warm enough to wait” states the product trade-off in one line, without stacking adjectives.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we’re asked most about this project’s design choices and delivery.
Why is an outdoor brand site almost all photography?
Firstlight sells the experience of getting up early for the sunrise. Three full-bleed photos are numbered like plates in a book, each linking to the gear in the shot, so the pictures double as navigation and do more to make people want to go than any spec list.
Is a single list really enough for a shop?
The four pieces are the whole range. One list gives the name, a one-line purpose, the price and an Add button for each, plus a button for the whole kit—no categories, filters or pagination needed.
Why number the photos as plates?
Captions like “PLATE 01 — RIDGE CAMP, FIRST LIGHT” make the site read like an outdoor photo book, giving the brand a restrained, tactile character and giving every photo a clear context and matching product.
What matters when building a photography-led brand site?
Large images are the main performance cost. We export modern formats in several sizes, load the hero image first and lazy-load the rest, so the site opens fast on mobile networks. Design to launch typically takes 3 to 5 weeks, with photography scheduled separately.
